Raccoon scat (poop)

Updated: Jun 20, 2021

Please remind me to put a measuring tape in my camera bag! Maybe one of those paper ones my kids used on the Math FSA 🙃.

I used my lens cap for scale instead. The size of the scat can help you identify who pooped it.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are Florida natives and love eating here! They are opportunistic omnivores. They will really eat anything around in the environment like plants, fruit from the Cabbage Palm, Saw Palmettos, Beautyberry, Sea grapes, wading bird eggs, and Oak tree acorns. Raccoons will also go through your garbage. This coastal mangrove boardwalk (pictured) is at Weedon Island Preserve where there are plenty fiddler crabs to munch on. Clearly you can see a claw! Just break up the scat with a stick or leaf.

It is important to note that just because the raccoons eat it doesn’t mean you should! If you want some, check Publix. If they don’t sell it, probably shouldn’t eat it. Leave all of these berries and fiddler crabs for the raccoons! Your body may not react the way you want it to, some other part of the plant may be harmful to touch, and there‘s already enough habitat loss.
